About
SkillSetPlus

SkillSetPlus puts students in control of their learning – helping them recognise their unique strengths and build on them in a way that works for them.

Designed for 13–16-year-olds, it offers a flexible, supportive way to help every student thrive. Especially for students who don’t always want to follow a traditional path or sometimes feel like school isn’t where they can excel.

SkillSetPlus supports your students with:

  • Personalised learning – students begin by taking a short quiz to identify their strengths, interests and learning style.
  • Skills-based modules – students then work through 12 short, scenario-based modules in their own time. Covering key skills like separating fact from fiction, to how to share their ideas with confidence.
  • Time for reflection – students are then encouraged to reflect on what they’ve learned, how they could use this in the real world, and are given prompts to discuss with their teacher.

Developed by The Open University, SkillSetPlus draws on decades of expertise in supporting learners from all backgrounds. It’s designed to meet students where they are, helping them build confidence and get the most from their school experience.

Skills for the future

SkillSetPlus helps students build core skills that they need in a changing world – selected based on research and first-hand educator insights. They’re also skills they’ll need if they want to go on to attend university or complete further study – especially if they’re the first in their family to do so.

Identified as an Essential Employment Skill through NFER research, SkillSetPlus focuses on three main areas:

  1. Learning to learn – we want them to understand how learning works, so they can feel confident and motivated to learn on their own.
  2. Understanding information – next, it’s all about helping students work out how, why and what information can be trusted, so they can make the best decisions for themselves.
  3. Communicating – speaking and listening with confidence. Asking for help. Expressing ideas clearly. Our final focus is about giving students the tools they need to succeed in the real world.

Worlds at their feet

We want students to see how they can use their existing strengths and new skills in real world situations. So, we’ve organised our SkillSetPlus content into the three worlds they move through most –education, work and social. They can explore them at their pace, in their own way.
